CASE STUDY

Background and Context:
The High School of Human Sciences, located in the city center, hosts a number of 376 students, all coming from the social context of Siena and its province. The approximate number of foreign students is 30, born by foreign parents and/or born abroad. Students are placed between 1 to 3 in the various classes of the first year, second year and last year classes.
Factual Description:
The project “Giving Asylum” takes place during the second school period of classes (2nd pentamester) and provides two hours for each involved class. The classes involved are 4.
Objectives of the project: to offer the student an opportunity of growth and an in-depth analysis of the anthropologic, sociologic, economical, religious, juridical and historical issues.
Activities carried out:
Organizational method: meetings with the asylum seekers in the territory, who are accompanied by an educator; presence of education expert personnel and involvement of local associations during the class activities. The proposed activities are informal and share cultural aspects and differences among different countries, also from a linguist point of view.
Assessment and lesson learnt:
The project had a positive impact for the students involved and also for young asylum seekers who, thanks to this opportunity, have been able to live the experience of feeling included, thanks to the fact that this inclusion started from a formal context, such as school.
Teachers have reported that the project had a positive effect. In fact, the teachers board decided to replicate the initiative with the same approach and decided to include it in the three-year education plan.
