Background and Context:
The Montesquieu public secondary school is located in the city of Le Mans, in the North-western part of France. It is attended by 1400 students in the three general education sectors (L, ES, S). It also offers five preparatory classes (two in literature, three in sciences) in the higher education sector.
It is one of the oldest schools of the city as it was founded in 1599, and one of the top ranked in its department for the quality of the teaching.
The students can choose among many extra courses: foreign languages, sciences, computer science, literature, cinema...
There is no special system for disable students, foreign students or students with learning difficulties.
Factual Description:
At the end of 2016, final-year students of the lycée Montesquieu organized a sale of sweatshirts with the logo of their school among their classmates.
On further consideration, and in view of recent events (the dismantling of the Calais Jungle), they decided to donate the money collected by the sale to a local charity organization in order to help the refugees of Calais learn to read and write French.
Activities carried out:
At first, three students contacted the student associations of the school (such as the Council of High-School Life) and informed them of their project to sell sweatshirts with the logo of the school. They received help on matters of logistics and funding.
At first, they did not envision this as a charity project, but after seeing the images of the dismantling of the Calais Jungle on TV, they decided to do something about it within their means.
Therefore, they decided to donate the money produced by the sale of the clothes to help the migrants. To be more precise, they wanted this money to be dedicated to the teaching of reading and writing. A student stressed the fact that some of these people "might one day become citizens of our country": the values of solidarity and inclusion motivated these students from the start.
After creating the sweatshirts with the logo of their school, they sold the clothes for €22 each; they had a lot of success in the school and even outside of it.
The funds raised were donated to a local charity organization, so that the students knew it would be dedicated to the goal they had chosen. That is how they gave €3100 to the Red Cross of the department of Sarthe.
Assessment and lesson learnt:
The president of the Red Cross of Sarthe stressed the importance of the sum of money collected by only one secondary school. The money will serve to help 150 refugees of Calais now learning French.
The students hope that the sale of these sweatshirts will be able to continue next year, with new students attending the school.
It is a relatively easy project to do since all sorts of items created by and for the students can be sold, including small ones.
