CASE STUDY

Background and Context:
This school is a vocational school that prepares students for jobs in the building industry and the energy and climate sectors. It is located in Bellac, a city of 4100 inhabitants in the south-western region of France.
Students may choose among 4 professional qualifications and 3 technical college baccalaureates.
The school participates in the Comenius Project which aims at facilitating communication between European cultures. To that end, it has several partnerships with Romania and Poland, and has translated in 3 languages a glossary of the professional words the students use during their learning.
Cultural and professional school trips are regularly organized.

Among the students, 18 different nationalities can be found, but there are only 7 girls in about 200 students.
Factual Description:
During the French National Week for Education Against Racism and Antisemitism in March 2017, the school planned a whole day of educational activities for the students, supervised by several teachers and visiting lecturers.
It was deemed appropriate by the school staff since the students of the school have many different origins and, what's more, there is still a considerable gender gap between girls and boys in the school and in the construction industry.

The activities focused on combatting racism, sexism and homophobia.
The teachers were joined by two volunteers from the French NGO "Human Rights League", a volunteer from the police force and a legal expert.
Activities carried out:
To participate in the activiteies, students were divided by groups of 10. The lecturers used videos staging racist attitudes, involving adults in particular, in order to make the students understand how strong the influence of the parents can be on developing racist prejudices.
The students were also taught basic legal concepts to remind them that racism is condemned in France and that victims can file complaints.

During the activities against sexism, students worked in groups on advertising messages and photographs depicting women as objects. The teachers and lecturers helped them decipher the messages between this type of pictures and reflect on them.
Assessment and lesson learnt:
The students participated in the activities with goodwill.

They stressed the importance of being heard when subjected to discriminations.

However, some students pointed that it was not the first time that they were educated on racism, and yet that these attitudes are still a part of society. Even if it is important to organize this type of project to make it clear that racism is unnaceptable, the students though that it cannot disappear completely and that they will eventually experience it.

Education against all forms of discrimination remains necessary in school and a special day of awareness like this one can be more fulfilling for the students since they can interact with visiting lecturers.
